8/25/13 Salmon Fishing Sacramento River

We’ve had a couple days of really great King Salmon action on the Sacramento River. These fish are bright nice fish with scales. The best producers has been the Yakima Bait Company T-55 Flat Fish and the Mag Lip 5.0.

7/27/13 Sacramento River Salmon

After spending the last couple days in Medford Oregon, we took advantage of a free day today and hit the Sacramento River with friends Mike Tripp and his son Ryan. We started off fishing T55 Flat Fish for the first couple hours. We had one quick grab that lasted a split second. After the sun hit the water we switched over to dragging roe. It wasn’t long before we landed a nice bright Salmon that I would guess was about 12 pounds. We continued working our way down the river working different holes along the way. We hooked up again and after a couple minutes this one threw the hook. At the next hole, Ryan hooked into a nice fish that gave him a good fight. His fish weighed in at 25.11 pounds. We worked a few more spots without any action. All in all, it was a great day! We got to see quite a few fish rolling in the morning and ended the day with two nice bright fish. Our roe today was cured with Pautzke Fire Cure. We used two different colors. One was just plain red and the other was a 50/50 mix of red and orange. The mixed cure seemed to be the one they wanted today. We will be at Stampede for the next few days before returning to the river.

1/17/13 Lake Berryessa’s Rainbow Trout

Despite all the reports that Berryessa was slow, I figured, I would go see if anything has changed. When I left Grass Valley at 6:00 AM it was 33 degrees and when I got to Markley Cove it was 28. We launched on the icy ramp and headed over towards Spanish Flat. We spotted a bunch of birds working so decided to start in the middle of them. We put a Shad 4′ behind a Shark Cannonball and down 25’ and another at 30. We also ran two baits about 100’ behind the boat and one down 6’ and one down 10’. It took less than five minutes before we had a fish on the 25’ downrigger but quickly lost him. Within a minute or two we hooked and landed a very nice rainbow on the 6’ line. This action kept going for about two hours before it quit. It was like someone turned a switch off. We couldn’t buy a fish after that. The birds quit feeding as well. We then moved over to the area just outside of the Dam and targeted Kings. We fished Shad and Anchovies for about an hour before calling it a day. We ended the day with about 10 hookups landing seven of them. All these rainbows were very nice two pound plus fish and all caught on Pautzke Blue Fire Brined Shad. The water surface temp was 48 when we launched and was just below 50 when we pulled out at 2:00 PM. The bite should only get better as the water warms.

12/7/12 Lake Berryessa

Paul Kneeland and Cal Kellogg joined us today on a little scouting trip to Berryessa. We launched at Markley Cove around 7:30 and started marking fish just outside the marina. We were marking fish from 40 to 110 feet deep. We dropped 2 rods with Shad and two with Anchovies both cured with Pautzke Fire Brine. Within a few minutes we had our first King in the boat, it was about a 2 lbs. We kept working this school but couldn’t get any others to take our presentation. We picked up and headed over to Skiers Cove and dropped in 4 rods with Shad and long lined a Grey Artic Fox fly off the back of the boat. It wasn’t long before we landed a 2.5-pound Rainbow on the fly. We continued to work this area and also work the rockslide area with the same setups. We ended up landing 6 nice rainbows before moving back to try for kings again. We ended up landing one more King making our total for the day 2 kings and 6 rainbows. Surprisingly, we found the water pretty clean given all the rain in the past week. We will be back on Berryessa for the next couple days. Watch for a more detailed report and pictures in the next Fish Sniffer.

11/2/12 Sacramento River (Clarksburg Area)

Today we fish out of Clarksburg on the Sacramento River with Eric and Matthew Snyder. Our mission today was for Matthew to catch his first salmon. Shortly into our first pass we hooked up. Matthew brought this fish about half way in and off it went. We got the lines back out and within 200 yards we hooked up again. This time Matthew landed his first salmon that weighed in around 9 or 10 pounds. After that we went into a two hour dry spell. Finally we hooked up again and Matthew’s dad Eric landed a nice bright salmon that went around 15 pounds. Half way through our last pass the sea lions started showing up so we finished that pass and called it a day. Both fish were caught on plugs with sardine wrap.

Father Warren Taylor and Daughter Mechelle Yates both from Modesto

We launched at 6:00 AM and headed up the river a few miles. We dropped our lines in at 6:35 and it wasn’t long before we had our first Salmon. We picked up our second fish on the next pass. From that point we had 2 or 3 grabs but they didn’t stick. Both the fish we got today were right at 15 pounds and in great shape. Both fish were caught on plugs with a sardine wrap.

10/13/12 Feather River

Our clients Brett, Cary and David drove all night from So Cal to fish with Tight Lines Guide Service for two days. After a couple of tough days of fishing, they were lucky enough to have their limits by 7:45 this morning. What a beautiful fall morning on the river.

10/10/12 Feather River

Lisa Rogers with her first Feather River Salmon. Lisa and her husband Nick went out for an afternoon trip. They are also the owners of Skippers Cove Marina on Englebright Lake. Our fish were caught on Kwikfish and dragging Pautzke Cured eggs.
